Smoke and dry air will not shorten your Botox results

Botulinum toxin works at the junction between nerve and muscle, well beneath the skin barrier. Smoke particles, low humidity and strong mountain sun never reach that layer.

What summer air does affect is the surface. Dehydrated, irritated skin reads rougher and makes fine lines look deeper, which is why people assume a treatment faded early when it did not.

The conditions behind this

On July 15, 2026, the Rocky Mountain Outlook reported that a fire advisory was in place for Canmore, the MD of Bighorn and Kananaskis as fire hazard increased across the region.

The weather that raises fire hazard is the same weather that pulls moisture out of skin. Hot days, low humidity and long stretches without rain.

Canmore also sits at roughly 1,300 metres. Thinner air at that elevation means more UV reaching your face and faster moisture loss than most visitors are used to closer to sea level.

What actually changes, and what to do about it

ConditionEffect on skinAdjustment
Low humidityBarrier dries out, fine lines look etchedHumectant serum under a richer cream at night
Wildfire hazeParticulate sits on skin, redness and itch for some peopleCleanse every evening, pause harsh actives
UV at elevationCollagen breakdown and pigment change over timeBroad spectrum sunscreen daily, reapply on trail days
Heat and sweatStings freshly treated skin and tempts rubbingKeep effort light for the first 24 hours after injections

None of these are reasons to delay treatment. They are reasons to be slightly more deliberate about the week around it.

Booking during a smoky stretch

You do not need to cancel because the valley is hazy. Product is placed under the skin and air quality has no bearing on how it settles or how long it holds.

Two things are worth adjusting.

Pause your actives, not your appointment

Retinoids and strong acids on already irritated skin make any post treatment redness more obvious. Give them a rest for a few days on either side of your visit.

Arrive hydrated

Long hikes, alcohol and dry air all leave skin looking flat. Coming in properly hydrated makes the assessment more accurate, which matters if you are also weighing up volume loss rather than movement lines.

The first 24 hours in a mountain summer

  • Stay upright for about four hours and avoid lying face down.
  • Skip the sauna, hot tub and hot yoga for the rest of the day.
  • Keep exercise easy. A flat walk along the Bow River is fine, a steep climb in full afternoon sun is not.
  • Do not rub or press the treated area, including under sunglass arms or a helmet pad.
  • Use sunscreen as normal. There is no reason to skip it.

These are standard aftercare instructions, not smoke specific ones. Summer in the Bow Valley just makes several of them easier to forget.

Three things people get wrong

"My Botox wore off in the smoke." Duration is driven by dose, muscle strength and metabolism, not by what is in the air.

"Smoke is what caused these lines." The lines that respond to wrinkle relaxing injections come from repeated muscle movement. Sun exposure and dryness affect texture and tone, which is a different problem with a different fix.

"I should wait until autumn." There is no clinical reason to. The one exception is an active flare of eczema or dermatitis at the injection site, which is worth settling first.

Straight answer on timing

If your last treatment was three or four months ago and movement is returning, that is normal wear rather than a weather effect. Book your next round and carry on.

If it has been six weeks and the result is softer than you wanted, that is a dosing conversation. Raise it at your review rather than waiting it out.

Treating across Canmore, Banff and the rest of the valley

Plenty of the people we see drive in from the other side of the park, and our page on injectables for Banff patients covers what to expect on that trip.

Summer is the busiest stretch of the year here between visitors, weddings and event weekends. If you want a specific date, book earlier than feels necessary.
